With her focus on community building and the fulfillment of her team, Ning (Amelie) Kang is determined to make MáLà Project a place where everyone comes together, prioritizing culture building, employee training, and staff advancement. Amelie decided to turn her passion for food, which began cooking next to her grandmother’s wok stove, into a career and left her hometown of Tangshan, two hours north of Beijing, to attend the Culinary Institute of America. After graduation, she worked every position in restaurant operations throughout New York City and found that the city was missing Chinese restaurants that demonstrated her hometown cuisine to its fullest. At age 24, she opened the first location of MáLà Project in East Village in 2015 to demonstrate the originality of her hometown cuisine. She has since opened three more locations in Bryant Park in 2017, Midtown East in 2020, and Greenpoint, Brooklyn in 2023. @ameliekang @malaproject | www.ameliekang.com www.malaproject.com

What inspires you to uncover more? I'm inherently driven by curiosity, always eager to ask questions and venture into uncharted territories. I believe that it's through the pursuit of the unfamiliar and the courage to ask even the simplest of questions that we uncover the most intriguing and valuable discoveries. This essence of exploration keeps me inspired to "uncover more" in life. Where is your go-to spot when in NYC? My go-to spot in NYC is McNally Jackson in Soho. It's more than just a bookstore; it's my personal sanctuary. I find peace in the company of books and the eclectic atmosphere of this literary haven. Whenever I need refuge, I seek the comfort of McNally Jackson. Is there a secret, local-only spot you can share? It's not exactly a hidden gem, but one of my favorite routines in New York is grabbing delectable donuts from Peter Pan Donut and enjoying them at McCarren Park. It's a simple joy that combines the warmth of a good donut with the serenity of nature, and it's one of those local experiences I wouldn't trade for anything. Where is your bucket-list destination? What makes you excited about visiting? My bucket-list destination is London. The thought of exploring its rich culture, history, and diversity that this city has always held a special allure for me. It's a place where the old meets the new in a fascinating blend. I'm excited about the prospect of immersing myself in London’s restaurant scene and experiencing both the familiar and the distinctly British culinary experiences.
